The Backbone of Industrial Energy

Straight Run HSFO

Straight Run High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO) is the primary residual fraction obtained directly from the atmospheric distillation of crude oil, distinguished by its unprocessed, stable hydrocarbon structure. As the foundational heavy fuel product, it delivers high energy density (40+ MJ/kg) and excellent thermal stability.

Straight from Crude, Straight to Your Engine

Straight Run HSFO

Straight Run Heavy Sulfur Fuel Oil (Straight Run HSFO) is a residual fuel oil produced directly from the atmospheric distillation of crude oil. It represents the portion of the crude that doesn’t vaporize and get separated into lighter fractions like gasoline, kerosene, and diesel at atmospheric pressure. Unlike “cracked” fuel oils, Straight Run HSFO has not undergone thermal cracking or other severe conversion processes. It is essentially a blend of the heaviest hydrocarbon molecules naturally present in the crude oil. This means its composition largely reflects the characteristics of the original crude. While HSFO, in general, is facing challenges due to tightening sulfur regulations, Straight Run HSFO serves as a critical blending component and a base for various fuel applications, particularly where scrubbers or other mitigation strategies are employed.

The importance of Straight Run HSFO lies in its role as a primary product stream in crude oil refining. It’s a key component of the overall refining process, even as the industry seeks ways to minimize its production of high-sulfur fuels.

Where Every Joule Counts

Straight Run HSFO Applications & Uses

Straight Run HSFO has several applications, although its use is increasingly influenced by sulfur regulations and the availability of lower-sulfur alternatives:

  • Marine Fuel (with Scrubbers) : Before IMO 2020, HSFO was a dominant marine fuel. Now, ships with scrubbers continue to use it, as these systems remove sulfur oxides from exhaust gases.

  • Power Generation (with Scrubbers) : Power plants with flue gas desulfurization systems can burn Straight Run HSFO to generate electricity. However, this is less common due to cleaner fuels and renewable energy.
  • Blending Component : It can be blended into other fuel oils like bunker fuel or industrial heating oil to meet specific quality specifications.
  • Coker Feedstock : Straight Run HSFO can be processed in a coker unit to produce lighter products and petroleum coke.
  • Industrial Heating : It is used for heating in industrial applications, especially where environmental regulations are less stringent.
  • Asphalt Production : It may be blended into asphalt mixtures, offering better compatibility than Cracked HSFO, provided the blend is carefully controlled.

Straight Run HSFO Specifications

Straight Run HSFO’s specifications are dictated by the characteristics of the crude oil from which it originates and by the distillation process. Important properties include:

This is the most critical specification. Straight Run HSFO typically has a high sulfur content, ranging from 1.0 wt% to over 4.0 wt%, depending on the source crude.
Viscosity is a key parameter for handling and combustion. Straight Run HSFO is a viscous fluid, requiring heating for pumping and proper atomization in burners. Viscosity is typically measured at 50°C or 100°C.
Straight Run HSFO is a heavy fuel oil with a low API gravity, typically less than 20.
A minimum flash point is required for safe handling, storage, and transportation.
Water content must be minimized to prevent corrosion and operational problems.
The ash content reflects the amount of non-combustible material in the fuel.

The pour point indicates the lowest temperature at which the fuel will flow.
While generally more stable than Cracked HSFO, Straight Run HSFO can still experience degradation and sludge formation during long-term storage.
Straight Run HSFO typically exhibits lower TSP than Cracked HSFO, indicating better stability and less tendency for sediment formation.
